As it turns out, the change itself was a cost-saving move. The BBC commissioned its own font, named Reith after founder John Reith, so that it no longer has to pay licensing fees for Gill Sans, the font used in the previous design. Of course, the new font can also be used in all areas of the broadcast corporation’s identity.
