Rigorous red, unbiased black, and true blue: those are the three colors that design firm Grand Army chose to update the familiar, three-block NPR Network logo in 2023.

Today, in the throes of defunding and threats of legal persecution by the federal government, the station still follows that color and moral plan. To show its commitment to continuing to ask the hard questions no matter what, NPR worked with creative advertising agency Mischief @ No Fixed Address to create an identity-boosting campaign that replaces the iconic letters “NPR” with the words “how,” “who,” and “why.”

From the NPR website: “The campaign brings forward questions—many from listeners—and connects directly to the NPR programs that answer them. The questions are real and urgent to the moment we’re in, from ‘How does AI affect my electric bill?’ to “Why are groceries still so expensive?’ to ‘How is my farm going to survive?’

“‘Curiosity is the fuel of a functioning democracy,’ said Mishka Pitter-Armand, chief marketing officer at NPR.”
