MLS Kicks Off 20th Season With New Logo

Major League Soccer's new logo thankfully does not screech “SOCCER” as it's old mark, in use since 1996, did. In fact, the new crest design is almost a bit anonymous at first glance, but it has a chameleon-like ability that will serve it well.

The main crest carries red, white, and blue, the colors of the U.S. and Canada, which are home to every club in the franchise. The three stars represent the league's ideals of community, club, and country. The purpose of the diagonal line is twofold: It suggests the energy of the game, and it divides the shield in two, representing the game's two 45-minute halves. The open space in the design provides a space for video and other graphics.

The colors of the design can be changed to match any of the clubs, which will make it easier for them to use on uniforms, promotional materials and so on.
