The first-ever European Games will be held June 12 through the 28, 2015, in Baku, Azerbaijan. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will participate in nineteen sports. The event's bold, bright identity was created by the design agency SomeOne.
Key to the identity is the pomegranate tree, which symbolizes unity in Azerbaijani folklore. The tree is laden with historic symbols from the country's culture, as well as with pictograms representing the various sports (also created by SomeOne).
SomeOne executive creative director Gary Holt explains the design's inspiration. Having visited Baku during the immersive phase of the project, we were impressed at just how beautiful the city was, and how visible the heritage and culture was all around. This inspired the creation of a living brand propertythe Baku 2015 pomegranate tree. Alive with athletes, Azerbaijani art and the pomegranates themselves, the tree has been designed to be adaptive, celebrating elite sport in the amazing setting of Bakuable to be dialed up in the run-up to the games, changing depending on the venue, the sport and the event.
