Guinness Brings History Back

The harp has been associated with the Guinness brand since 1862 when it was first used on a bottle label. Now Design Bridge has helped recreate the harp icon, bringing it back to its roots.

Over many years, the illustration of the original harp has grown increasingly flat—dimensionally and emotionally—as detail was removed. The revived mark is full of detail and history, not to mention musical accuracy. Illustrator Gerry Barney created amazing sketches based on Design Bridge brand guidance plus consultations with renown harpmakers Niebisch & Tree. Guinness archives were also mined for typographic and graphic cues.

“There's been so much almost pseudo-authenticity in design over the years, with lots of new products and brands that are made to look authentic, so when a brand has an absolutely true, authentic story, it takes a little more to get that story across in a real way,” says Birgitte Woehlk, Design Bridge brand guardian.
