There are certain logos that are so familiar that even the tiniest alteration is evident. So recently, when almost no one noticed YouTube’s logo update, even after it was widely announced on social media, you know the change was very small indeed.

The main change was changing the brand color from a true red to a cooler, pinker red. There was practicality and logic behind the move. Robyn Lee, YouTube’s visual lead, explains. “Our refresh journey began by pinpointing YouTube’s most outdated elements through research. Color ranked in the top three, so we knew that evolving our palette would make an immediate and significant impact…. We wanted an evolution, not a revolution. Red, core to YouTube’s identity, demanded a delicate touch. Rather than reinventing the wheel, we aimed to refine it,” she says.

The cooler red also resolves technical issues like screen burn-in. The new system also includes a new red-to-magenta gradient across YouTube’s platform.
