The Studio Theatre in Washington, DC, is well known for its bold, socially relevant, and artistically daring performances. The organization worked with Pentagram to create a type-driven identity that proclaims that intrepid spirit. Its industrial feel also speaks of Studio’s location, which is in a former factory.

From the Pentagram website: “The wordmark and primary typography are set in a non-stencil version of the utilitarian heavyweight font AType (designed by Pentagram partner Matt Willey); secondary type appears in the geometric sans Metric (from Klim Type Foundry) and the serif Publico (from Commercial Type). The primary brand palette is a striking yellow, black and white.”

Yellow is a big part of the brand. The use of the bold color on the outside of the building is striking, especially on the very large “STUDIO” sign, built from 6-foot-tall letters. Very large murals are also used inside and outside of the theater. These share photos from past productions as well as theater posters.
