We’ve waited several days since Verizon’s release of its new brand, Oath, hoping to learn more about the inscrutable name and the reasoning behind its design (because April Fools). No news has been forthcoming regarding the umbrella brand that will now reportedly cover AOL, Yahoo, Huffington Post and other related companies. So far, a punny hashtag—TakeTheOath—has been the extent of it.

It’s a shame no additional explanation has been offered, because in the meantime, social media has happily filled up the information vacuum and is having a field day with the pair of blue balls (to be fair, a colon) that management served up as part of the design. Maybe they—or the entire design—are simply trial balloons.
