, to celebrate what theater organizers call its “Year of Change.”
The new logotype is set in the typeface Knockout, which was selected for its bold nature and resemblance to type used in early letterpress and billboard posters. For inspiration, Eureka! designers studied advertising from the theater’s 250-year-old archives, now protected at the University of Bristol’s Theatre Collection.
The split design, with its subtle shadow effect connecting two fields, represents the connection between old and new, between the theater and the community, and between the stage and the audience. But it could also be a subtle nod to the theater’s birth in 1766, when it operated illegally and was hidden from view behind a row of houses.
