Warner Bros. Records was founded in 1958 as a division of Warner Bros. Pictures. It was eventually acquired by Time Warner, which sold the music company to a group of investors in 2004 with the understanding that the Warner Bros. name and logo could be used for 15 years.

Time now up, the now-renamed Warner Records, with the help of Pentagram, has an identity of its own, quite distinct from the familiar Warner shield. From a company announcement, the new design's circular motif suggests “a record, a sun and a globe—a nod to the label's past, present and future. The openness of the design gives it the flexibility to embrace all Warner Records artists and all genres of music around the world.”

The new identity is in step with other changes, including new company management, a new state-of-the-art headquarters, and the recent redesign of the brand identity of Warner Chappell, Warner's publishing division.
