“Little Cows” Out, “Lone Ranger Heroes” In

In China, the “maverick” translates to “little cows”—a somewhat apt translation since a maverick is defined as an unbranded calf or yearling. But when “Little Cows” turns out to be an NBA team name, it’s not exactly an intimidating identity.

The Dallas Mavericks have been known as the Little Cows in China for about 30 years, and team owners weren’t thrilled. Not only was the nickname tepid, the team’s logo is a horse, further muddying the watering hole. After receiving more than 60,000 proposed name submissions, three candidates—Lone Ranger Heroes, Mad Horses and Wild Horses—became the finalists. And curiously, the rather presumptuous name Lone Ranger Heroes won out.

The Mavericks’ horse logo will not change. Players seem pleased with the change. “Obviously, I’d rather be a lone ranger than be a cow,” said Mavericks guard Devin Harris.
