// PLANET PROPAGANDA - NONSEK

"Have it your way." What used to apply to hamburgers applies to lots of experiences these days-television, music, internet, and more. Why not design?

Planet Propaganda (Madison) has launched a new division, Nonsek, which allow you, at the push of a button at www.nonsek.com, to remix three fragments of art and graphics, randomly pulled from a treasure trove of artists' work-including graphics from Art Chantry and Aesthetic Apparatus-into endless iterations that can be printed on one-of-a-kind T-shirts. Push the button again and again, and the remixes keep coming. It's somewhat addictive.

"It's an idea that's not hard to get your head around," explains Kevin Wade, now product and creative director of Brand P, a new splinter division of Planet Propaganda. He and his partners had been discussing the potential of graphic remixing for some time before deciding to dedicate Wade's time to developing Nonsek.

"Audio remixing has been around for ages. What we have done is very simple-brought together a group of artists, each of whom have their own niches, and allow Nonsek users to remix their work," explains Wade.

The artists involved with the project like the concept, he says. They benefit from the revenues of T-shirt sales (other products are under consideration) as well as from the promotional exposure. They also get to repurpose work that would otherwise just be sitting idle. The artists also have control of what position on the grid their art will appear, in what colors and other factors, if they choose to control those factors.

Brand P is also developing a widget that artists could place on their own sites that would allow them and/or visitors to remix the work found there. An iPhone ap won't be far behind. Wade says they hope to develop contests, Twitter feeds, and mixed channels featuring other artists' work that may appear for only very limited periods of time on Nonsek.

"This is where technology is going," says Wade. "When someone releases a body of work in music, the next move is to remix it, then pass it along to the next person. With the world and the web moving so fast, if you try to control experiences, you're doomed. You have to allow users to do what they like."
